The silicon on insulator market is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. The growth may be attributed to increasing adoption across a diverse range of applications areas. Silicon on insulator is an improved method to manufacture semiconductor chips that allows more compact chip designs, and helps achieve higher production yield and enhanced fabrication productivity. It uses pure crystal silicon and silicon oxide for ICs as well as microchips. The technology also provides a high processing speed as compared to conventional complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS)-based ICs and also reduces power consumption significantly. Owing to the aforementioned benefits the silicon on insulator market is expected to witness considerable growth over the forecast period. The silicon on insulator market is also expected to witness significant growth as bulk CMOS technology is confronted with power, scaling and performance challenges.
The silicon on insulator technology helps improve performance of high-speed severs along with mobile computing and communication devices, which is also expected to drive market demand over the next few years. The technology is also used in an array of applications areas such as direct-link entertainment & communications and global ranging. Silicon on insulator coupled with certain radiation resistant material increases it functionality in higher operating temperature applications such as communication satellites and other orbiting deep-space systems along with certain automotive diagnostics and control applications. High-speed and high switching power SOI transistors availability is further expected to impel market demand over the next few years.
Surging demand for microcontrollers, microprocessors and consumer electronics, including mobile phones, digital cameras, notebooks etc in developed regions, including Europe and North America is expected to drive the regional market demand. Furthermore, Asia Pacific is also expected to witness high growth owing to the surge in demand for consumer electronics. Emergence of the IC industry in Asian countries such as China and India, are expected to drive the demand for the domestic silicon on insulator market. However, factors such as intricate manufacturing process, volatile raw materials and complex designing necessary in product development may pose a challenge to silicon on insulator market growth.
Key market participants include IBM Corporation, Freescale Semiconductors, STMicroelectronics, Global Foundries and ARM Holdings PLC.
