Blinds are more than just pretty adornments for your home, they are functional coverings for your windows. Window blinds no doubt provide the privacy needed to make the room comfortable, they are also a means to save energy. Most home owners now choose energy saving blinds because of the obvious reason – they cut your energy costs.
There are two types of blinds, interior blinds and exterior blinds. Interior blinds are affixed on the insides of the window. They can be opened or closed depending on how much light you want to let into the room. Interior blinds are suitable for light control; by letting light into a room, they do away the need to switch on lamps during the daytime helping you save energy.
Exterior blinds go on the outside of the window panes. They can be pulled down completely to block out the heat generated by harsh sunlight or to keep out the bitter cold in the winter months. Exterior blinds are energy saving blinds because they help keep the house warm in winter reducing your energy consumption considerably.
Steel, aluminium, wood or outdoor vinyl are the materials used for exterior blinds. These materials effectively block out the light and heat while also maintaining the ambient temperatures within, making them “energy saving blinds” in the true sense.
Insulation is the main reason for choosing energy saving blinds. By insulating the room in winter, blinds reduce your heating bills. You also save energy by using natural light during the day.
While it is a smart option to use energy saving blinds in your home, using them effectively goes a long way in energy conservation. Whether in winter or summer, air circulation in the house is very important. As such, it is important to open the windows and let in the fresh air circulate to clear up the interior atmosphere.
In winter, the windows may be opened in the afternoons so as to let out the moisture which would otherwise make the rooms colder and minimise the effect of the insulation provided by the blinds. In summer, opening the windows early in the mornings is essential to dispel the heat trapped in the room and let in fresh air. Your energy saving blinds will work more effectively if you follow these practices.
