Mahindra Ecole Centrale(MEC) College of Engineering, Hyderabad, organizes an industry connect programme at Mumbai

Mahindra École Centrale(MEC) college of engineering organized an Industry Connect session on the central theme “Innovation is not about Re-Inventing the wheel”in Mumbai. Targeted at HR specialists, the event witnessed participation from around 40 industry leaders from HR domain who deliberated on the role of innovation within the organization.

The Industry Connect platform of MEC sought to bring together human resources professionals from leading enterprises, business leaders and strategic thinkers to deliberate on the changing role of human capital in reshaping businesses in the near future.

Innovation is increasingly becoming the key differentiator and talent filter when it comes to employability across the industry spectrum. It becomes therefore important to define Innovation and the parameters that support this paradigm.

The keynote session by Professor Hariharan Krishnan, Head of Creative Sciences at MEC deliberated on how innovation is really a constant search for improvement by individuals and is a journey rather than a destination. He explained how innovation is reflected in learning/teaching/deploying knowledge and the outcomes that could ensue for those who promote and practice Innovation at work and in life.

At this forum, a panel discussion with the topic “From Ideation to Market – Kindling Latent Talent” also took place. The panelists included Mr. Dharam Rakshit, VP – HR, Godrej Industries, Mr. Debabrata Mohapatra, Head – HR, L&T Electrical & Automation, Mr. Sunit Mehra, Managing Partner of Hunt Partners and Prof. Dider Clouteau, Dean – Academics, MEC. Prof. TSK Murthy, Dean – Operations and Industry Connect, MEC was a panelist as well as the moderator for the discussions.

Prof. Murthy kick-started the discussion by sharing that Innovation is all about three types – Product, Processes and Business Model Education. Mr. Dharm Rakshit spoke about how one should “Innovate by leading rather than following and listening”. Mr. Sunit Mehra also said that "Leadership has to walk the talk to raise innovation in this nation/organization” and if an organization makes Innovation a part of its value systems, then the ideas will automatically flow.

“Develop Intrapreneurship culture in organizations to Innovate”, said Mr. Debobrata Mohapatra as the way to growth. Prof. TSK Murthy said that “Organizations should stop Looking at Key Words but look at Key Capabilities while recruiting”

The discussions that ensued revolved around the increasing importance of various critical areas of HR such as retention, employee engagement, talent acquisition and management on today’s businesses and how Innovation can help in each area if it is made a part of the organizational culture. The role of educational institutions in India in inculcating lateral thinking and innovation was also highlighted.
