Industry Insights-Increase in infrastructure activities especially in regions of Asia Pacific, is expected to fuel the demand for LAB over the forecast period. Heavy duty industrial cleaners, an end use product of LAB, finds a major application in infrastructure sector owing to its use in removal heavy dirt and cleaning of paintwork, vinyl or leather upholstery. Governmental imposed restrictions on use of non-biodegradable materials is expected to have a positive outlook on the market demand. Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), a biodegradable derivative of LAB, is dominantly used in surfactant preparations. LAS are environmentally friendly and help detergents production in large volumes.
Volatility in international crude oil prices may hamper the supply of LAB in domestic markets owing to the cut in production capacity by manufacturers. Increase in R&D activities for commercialization of new niche applications is expected to provide a key opportunity for LAB market growth. Global market is highly competitive and fragmented owing to the large number of industry participants operating domestically and internationally. Companies compete on the basis of price and applications in niche segments. Key industry participants in the market include CEPSA Quimica S.A., Chevron Phillips Chemical and Unggul Indah Cahaya.

Application Insights
LAB finds application in commercial and household sector. Increasing household cleaner demand is expected to be the fasted growing application segment. LAB is widely used based on end-user applications for manufacturing heavy duty laundry liquid, laundry powders, light duty dishwashing liquid and household & industrial cleaners. As of 2013, Heavy duty laundry liquid dominates global LAB market in terms of revenue and volume owing to intensive use in infrastructure sector. Following heavy duty laundry liquid, industrial cleaner segment accounted for the second largest share in the global market. Industrialization growth coupled with rapid urbanization in emerging economies is expected to significantly augment industrial cleaner’s market growth. Other key application includes use in ink solvents, paint industry, agriculture herbicides, electric cable oils, wetting agents and emulsion polymerization. It is also used liquid scintillator in neutrino detectors.
Regional Insights
Asia Pacific dominated LAB market both in terms of volume and revenue. Asia Pacific has become a major consumer owing to strong economic developments and increasing number of companies producing LAS. Asia Pacific countries such as China and India are expected to witness an increase in demand over the next six owing to spending large amounts on infrastructure activities. Increasing population coupled with disposable incomes among the middle class is another factor contributing to growth of LAB demand in this region. Increase in demand for biodegradable cleaning agents is expected to significantly fuel the demand for LAB market. North America and Europe are mature LAB markets and are expected to grow at modest rates owing to the slowdown of application markets and new manufacturing facilities being set up in emerging economies.
