Irving ISD Senior Angel Gonzalez Receives Dr. Doug Won Scholarship

Lumin Health CEO Says Deserving Students Should Be Honored

During The Irving Schools Foundation Inc. 28th Annual Breakfast with the Stars, Angel Gonzalez was awarded the Dr. Doug Won Scholarship. The award is a $1,000 scholarship given annually to a graduating senior with academic achievement, financial need and a desire to “give back” to the community.

The scholarship is named after Lumin Health Founder and CEO Dr. Douglas Won, a world-renowned spine surgeon and local businessman. The Irving Schools Foundation recognizes hundreds of deserving students annually through scholarships, and Dr. Won has been a part of that process for many years.

“At Lumin Health, we’re committed to making a difference in the lives of our patients and our community,” said Dr. Won. “Being a part of this scholarship program is just another way we can give back. We’re honored to recognize young people like Angel, who have great potential but may need a little help as they work to achieve their dreams.”

Gonzalez is a high school senior at Jack E. Singley Academy in Irving, Texas. After graduation, he plans to attend The University of Texas and study electrical engineering.

The Irving Schools Foundation Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit. According to its website, it seeks to maximize educational opportunities for teachers and students by funding projects and activities that are not within the budgetary guidelines of Irving ISD and for which tax dollars may not be expended.

Breakfast with the Stars is an annual event held by the foundation to honor that year’s scholarship winners and their sponsors. The breakfast, which was held in the Irving Convention Center on April 28 this year, allows students, parents and sponsors to meet.
