Coaching is an integral part of any activity that involves learning. Sportsmen perform better when they are coached properly. Musicians perform better with coaching, as do students. It is thus important to understand what coaching is. Coaching is not the same as education; rather, it is a supplement to it. In other words, coaching is some kind of fine-tuning of specific skills. It is imparted for a fixed, limited period of time to address a particular learning or skill gap.
Once the coaching is given, in most organizations, its effectiveness is measured against the results that employees turn out post-coaching. In many instances, coaching is measurable and accountable. Most organizations that offer coaching for their employees measure their post-coaching performance in relation to their pre-coaching performance to assess the effectiveness of the coaching.
What is to be coached? Organizations that seek a higher degree of level of performance from their employees offer coaching to this effect. So, coaching is done for a purpose, with a fixed objective in mind, and is offered with the necessary tools needed to improve an individual’s or team’s performance of the organization’s goals. To do all this, the organization’s management and HR have to identify the areas that need to be fixed or honed, so that as a result, the organization is able to raise the bar of performance.
Coaching is an ongoing process, not a one-time exercise
This leads to another aspect of coaching: Coaching is a journey, not a destination. It is a process, and not a step. In order to help the individual or team reach the expected or desired levels of performance or excellence; coaching often needs to be given over a period of time, taking into fullest consideration the needs of the individual or the team.
A one-time coaching session is never a panacea for the problems plaguing a team or an organization. Like how Rome was not built in a day; no team or organization can always hope to wind up their coaching in a session. Many organizations impart coaching for more than one session that is spread over a period of time.
Coaching needs to be given in phases
Coaching, as we have seen, cannot be effective when it is done superficially. A professional coach would adapt a gradual and phased approach to coaching, keeping in mind the peculiar and unique requirements of the individual or team that needs to be coached. A good coach would approach coaching through phases, namely:
- Initiating the coaching: Understanding what kind of coaching is needed and for whom
- Observing: Constantly monitoring the progress being made on account of the coaching
- Pondering: Cogitating on whether a certain level of type of coaching is serving the purpose or not
- Assessing: Making an objective evaluation of the coaching process from time to time.
All along, the coach would be asking herself crucial and perceptive questions in relation to the individual or team’s coaching needs. To achieve this, the coach needs to be:
o A good listener
o Good at posing the right questions
o Appreciative of the lessons being imbibed by the team
o Disinterested in her evaluation
Coaching can be for the team or for individuals that are part of the team
Another feature of coaching for performance is that different individuals and even different members in a team may need different coaching strategies. This is quite natural, considering that different team members are at different levels of skills, education, experience and proficiency. A one-size-fits-all approach is not only possible to adapt; even if it is, it can be terribly counterproductive.
In other words, performance coaching can be of two categories: Coaching for the individual and coaching for the team.
In the case of coaching for the individual, coaching is about upgrading a person’s abilities after identifying the shortfall. This is done to bring her or him to the level of the rest of the team, so that he or she gets better at the areas on which she needs working on, until she matches up to the rest of the team.
The same goes for coaching for the team. When the team’s overall performance is to be raised through coaching, the coach goes about identifying the team’s strengths and drawbacks and suggests ways by which the team can improve its performance.
All these mean that coaching for performance is not something that can be done as a mundane task that needs to be carried out with the purpose of checking boxes.
Purposes of coaching
Coaching is aimed at equipping the employee with the necessary skills needed in some areas. One type of coaching relates to helping to improve the employee’s performance at work. These could be about the technical, nontechnical, managerial or just about any other aspect related to her area of work. It estimated that nearly two fifths of the organizations that are subject to classroom training find that this medium alone is not enough to help them attain the desired results. This is why coaching is taken to step in and help fill up the inadequacy.
Another type of coaching relates to helping the employee augment or improve her interpersonal skills. Many organizations have a need for this kind of coaching because many employees, especially in the IT industry, while being strong technically, lack the interpersonal and communication skills needed to work harmoniously in an organization. This comes under the Employee Engagement category of coaching.

We are greatly privileged to be working with such topnotch experts”, he says.
According to Liju Mathew, Co-Founder and Chief Business Development Officer at NetZealous LLC; there is almost no area or topic that is not covered by one or another NetZealous brand. “The topics for our trainings are arrived at only after getting the viewpoint of our expert. The expert decides on the topic, and we take it up from there. For example, the seminar we are holding on coaching for better performance has not only been chosen by the appropriate expert; it is designed in such a fashion as to make the participants get a complete understanding of the topic to such an extent that they start implementing the learning at their work immediately after the training. This after all, is where professional trainings differ from traditional trainings. We want to be a medium that facilitates greater understanding of all areas that are taught by our experts. We have largely succeeded in this attempt”, he says.
