Shoes endure a lot in our daily lives. From muddy trails to city sidewalks, they accumulate dirt, grime, and odors over time. Many of us wonder if it's safe to toss our beloved footwear into the washing machine to give them a fresh start. The answer is yes, but with some caveats. In this article, we'll explore the dos and don'ts of washing shoes in the washing machine, ensuring your favorite kicks come out clean and unscathed.
Can You Wash Shoes in the Washing Machine?
The short answer is yes, you can wash most shoes in the washing machine. However, the process isn't one-size-fits-all. Different types of shoes require different methods, and some may not be suitable for machine washing at all.
Dos and Don'ts of Washing Shoes in the Washing Machine
Do: Check the Label
Before you even think about tossing your shoes into the washing machine, check the manufacturer's label or instructions. Some shoes come with specific care instructions that may advise against machine washing.
Do: Remove Insoles and Laces
Take out the insoles and shoelaces. Insoles can be washed separately, and removing laces ensures that both the shoes and laces get cleaned thoroughly. It also prevents the laces from getting tangled in the machine.
Do: Use a Mesh Laundry Bag
Place the shoes in a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase. This will protect both your shoes and your washing machine. It prevents your shoes from bouncing around and potentially damaging the machine.
Do: Choose the Right Cycle and Temperature
Select a gentle or delicate cycle on your washing machine. Use cold water to prevent colors from fading and to avoid potential damage to glue or adhesive used in the shoes.
Do: Use Mild Detergent
Use a small amount of mild laundry detergent. Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the shoes and affect their color.
Don't: Use Too Much Detergent
Less is more when it comes to detergent. Using too much detergent can leave a soapy residue on your shoes, making them feel stiff and uncomfortable.
Don't: Mix with Other Items
Don't wash your shoes with other clothing or items. The shoes can transfer dirt and color onto your clothes, and your clothes might not appreciate the rough treatment.
Don't: Use High Heat
Avoid using a high-heat setting on your dryer if you plan to machine-dry your shoes after washing. Excessive heat can cause shoes to lose their shape or shrink.
Don't: Machine Dry All Shoes
Not all shoes are suitable for machine drying. Athletic shoes with foam cushioning or leather shoes can be damaged by the heat. Instead, let them air dry naturally, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
Types of Shoes You Can Wash in the Machine
1 Canvas Sneakers: Canvas sneakers, like Converse or Vans, are among the most popular candidates for machine washing. They are durable and typically come out of the machine looking refreshed.
2 Mesh Running Shoes: Many running shoes with mesh uppers can be machine-washed. Make sure to remove the insoles and laces before tossing them in.
3 Flip-Flops and Sandals: Basic rubber flip-flops and sandals are easy to clean in the machine. Just make sure to secure them in a laundry bag to prevent tangling.
4 Rain Boots: Rubber rain boots can also go through a gentle cycle to remove mud and grime.
Types of Shoes to Avoid Machine Washing
1 Leather Shoes: Leather can be damaged by water and heat. Avoid machine washing leather shoes, as it can cause them to crack, warp, or lose their shape. See how to clean leather shoes for more tips.
2 Suede Shoes: Suede is delicate and should never be submerged in water. Instead, use a suede brush and cleaner to spot clean.
3 Shoes with Foam Cushioning: Shoes with foam cushioning, like running shoes, can lose their cushioning properties if machine-washed. Instead, clean them by hand.
4 High Heels: The delicate construction of high heels does not fare well in a washing machine. Spot clean and wipe them down gently.
After Washing Your Shoes
Once the washing cycle is complete, remove your shoes from the laundry bag and reshape them if necessary. Stuff them with newspaper to help them retain their shape and absorb excess moisture. Allow them to air dry naturally in a well-ventilated area. Avoid using direct heat sources like radiators or hairdryers, as they can damage your shoes.
Conclusion
Washing your shoes in the washing machine can be a convenient way to give your favorite footwear a fresh start, but it's not a one-size-fits-all solution.
